DIGITAL PRODUCTS

If you are interested in making the switch to digital television or digital radio, there are some specific pieces of hardware that you will need in order to be able to receive and process the digital signals being broadcast. Unfortunately due to the technology involved with digital broadcasting it is necessary to purchase an additional box (similar in appearance to a VCR or DVD player) which can decode the compressed data signal which is sent by the broadcasting station. Digital radio also requires digital-specific hardware, but an increase in the numbers of DAB receivers in recent years has meant the price for the receivers has become less inhibitive.

Some digital television subscription services, such as Sky in the UK, offer a free digital set-top box when you subscribe to the service. Although the installation price or initial membership fee may be higher (to factor in the cost of the set-top box), it is a good way to get hold of a box which is compatible with the service itself. If you would like to purchase your own set-top box which is independent of a subscription service, many of the high street electrical retailers now sell them, as well as supermarkets and online businesses such as Amazon. It’s important to carefully read the description of the set top box you decide to purchase, as many people assume that having the box will automatically enable them to receive some of the subscription services and channels offered by digital providers such as Sky. This isn’t always the case, so make sure you know what you’re purchasing before you leave the store.
